Philosophy
As members of the Education Awareness Society, we believe that we can create a new, democratic and equitable nation through education. For this to be manifested we must understand that we must work together for one common cause. As novice teachers and aspiring professionals, we know that we are more than able to rise to the challenges. We believe that every lesson, every project and every task we engage in shall be done with the utmost dignity, truth, respect, integrity, nobility.
History Of
The Education Awareness Society
The Education Awareness Society, known as E.A.S. is one of the oldest clubs on the Oakes Field Campus, which began in the 1980s as an a-hoc entity to allow students in the then ‘Division of Education’ a forum for discussion and education about issues that impacted teaching and learning outside the formal curriculum. EAS over the years has given future educators the opportunity to explore issues that impact teaching and learning and to network and explore means for addressing them. The club liaises with the School of Education and other student bodies as it seeks to ensure the supports needed for its members’ all-round development as educators in the 21st century.
During the 1990s, the club lobbied for a space where aspiring educators could call ‘home’ and E10, a small room in the E Block then used as a storage space was given to EAS as a means of their home base. The room was officially dedicated and named “The Sheila Seymour Resource Room” December 2nd 1998 and Dr Leon Higgs was the president of the college at that time.
The Club continues to evolve and with climate change and other challenges faced by educators in the 21st century, including the development of global citizens, the role the club plays remains relevant and important as future educators explore teaching and learning from both formal and informal aspects.
